When v8 asks
v8 asks only when one or two facts would change the prompt a lot and the repository cannot answer them: which database, where the tests live, the new name in a rename. At most three questions, one at a time, each with numbered options. This works the same in Claude Code and Codex when you press the key.
The deciding detail
Some requests cannot be done right without a value only you know: the new name in a rename, the number for a new limit, the route of a new endpoint. A coding agent given such a request has to guess, and a wrong guess fails the task. That is the question v8 is built to ask.
We measured it. On 12 held-out tasks of this kind, Claude Code with Sonnet solved 50% with the answer and 17% without it. A simulated user answered, so read it as an upper bound; the benchmark has every study and its limits.
How to answer
| Key | What it does |
|---|---|
| a digit | picks that option |
| Enter | takes the first option |
| Esc, 0 or g | skips the rest: the prompt keeps its assumptions and lists the open questions for the agent to settle before it starts |
| Ctrl + C | stops and leaves your text untouched |
Nothing is ever sent to your agent for you. After the questions you still review the prompt and press Enter.
Answering is free
One request uses one advanced prompt from your allowance, whether or not you answer questions. The follow-up that carries your answers does not count as a second prompt, on every plan.
Answers are remembered
Answers you confirm are remembered for that repository on your computer, in ~/.v8-prompt/projects/ (at most 8 per repository, newest first), and sent with later prompts from the same repository, so you are not asked the same thing twice. To forget them:
v8-prompt forget # this repository
v8-prompt forget --all # every repository
Fewer questions, or none
v8-prompt questions # shows the current limit (default 3)
v8-prompt questions 1 # at most one question per prompt
v8-prompt questions 0 # never ask; state assumptions instead
With 0, v8 writes what it assumed into the prompt as assumption lines, which you can correct before pressing Enter.
In the plugin and in scripts
/v8:promptin Claude Code: Claude shows v8's questions with its question tool, with v8's options and room for your own answer. Skip them and the prompt states its assumptions.v8-prompt improve: questions are asked only when stdin is a terminal.--no-questionsnever asks and writes assumptions instead. A program that asks the user itself can use--json --ask, which returns the questions with a token, and then send the answers with--answers <file>; that second step is the free follow-up.
